Residential metal roofing is usually made of steel, aluminum or copper. While this means it is more expensive than traditional shingle roofing, metal roofing has a much longer service life. To prepare for installation, 24- or 26-gauge sheet steel rolls are given a metal coating to prevent rusting, followed by a baked-on paint finish. This paint finish can be customized with a color to match the overall look of your home. Steel decks are coated with zinc (galvanized) or a mixture of aluminum and zinc. The coatings are of various thicknesses: the thicker, the more durable and the more expensive.
